What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a gentle and safe, natural system of healing that stimulates the immune system.
“It is a beautiful synthesis of science, philosophy and experience into a medical art whose practice is both simple and profound.”
Mo Morrish 2007
Homeopathy is based upon fixed principles which were established over 200 years ago by a German doctor, named Samuel Hahnemann. Hahnemann taught that the body will do whatever it can to alert us to disharmony, and this is expressed by symptoms. An example of this might be that a person suffers from headaches when they are feeling run down. The headache is the body’s way of saying ‘slow down’.
Whereas conventional medicine targets symptoms, aiming to eliminate them, homeopaths value symptoms as clues which help us to match a suitable remedy to the individual. This way, the cause of the disease can be treated, whereas removing symptoms alone, in the conventional way does not remove the disease or its cause.
Using the above example, if a person is suffering from a painful headache, the first thing they might think of doing is taking a headache pill. This will mask the symptoms of the headache, giving the person relief, so that they may continue with whatever they were doing. The result will be further strain on the body, and potentially over time it could lead to more harmful conditions as the body struggles harder to alert the person to its disharmony. However, this is normal behaviour as we tend to spend time focusing on our jobs, families and daily tasks, paying little attention to our own needs.
How homeopathy works
The founding principle of homeopathy is based upon the law of similars. This means that a remedy is chosen which most closely matches the symptoms that the patient is expressing. The remedy is administered in minute doses which have been specially prepared and they work by gently boosting the body’s own natural healing energy, stimulating the body to heal itself.
